Astoria Taco Crawl

Astoria Taco Crawl

After our all out Japan adventure in April, Dave and I spent many nights mostly cooking healthy meals at home. When we got together one Saturday with a couple of our friends, we decided to do something we’d been dreaming of for a while – a taco crawl! And right in our neighborhood, Queens. Astoria has a diverse mix of restaurants. We met up for a happy hour drink at Judy and Punch, and mapped out the places we wanted to try. In addition to authentic Mexican tacos, we also wanted to taste some other interesting taco creations. We aimed to have about 1 taco at each place to maximize space in our bellies for taco-yumminess. Here are the six delicious tacos we tried!

The first stop was just down the street at The Social, which had just been open for a month. Their mini lobster hardshell tacos sitting on a little decorative rack were a good appetizer sized portion to start off with.

Next, we went to Off the Hook, which is already one of our favorite Astoria seafood restaurants. We decided to try their fish tacos (delicious), washed down with a jalapeno oyster shot each (we also couldn’t resist sharing a dozen oysters)

The third stop on the crawl was Orale Tacos, a hole in the wall takeout joint with a few tables. Wrapped in cute cone shapes, the lengua (beef tongue) taco was so packed with flavor. I could eat here again and again.

Already feeling a tad full, we set on to the 4th stop over at Los Portales. The one taco that caught my eye was the Oreja (pig ear) taco, which I’d never had before – so glad I tried it. It had a nice gelatin-y and subtle crunch of cartilage.

Las Catrinas is a fun bar and eatery in the neighborhood. It was fun to eat al fresco, carnitas taco in one hand and a margarita in the other!

Afterwards, we took a “break” from eating tacos at Break for some billiards and beer for a few hours.

At this point we were trying to chase down the alcohol. Our final taco crawl destination was our favorite taco truck in NYC. We ordered a bunch of tacos including lengua (the best one) and chorizo. Perfect for post drinking. It was so good that we even forgot to take pics!
